Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 are now in force for the majority of workplaces in the UK, including the music and entertainment sectors, and will come into force in 2011 for workers on seagoing ships.

Compared to the old Noise at Work Regulations 1989 the new Regulations bring significant changes to the actions required by employers and employees and the noise exposure action values and noise exposure limit values have been lowered.

The Regulations specify action values and exposure limit values for daily personal noise exposure (or weekly personal noise exposure) and peak sound pressure level.

The lower exposure action values are:

The upper exposure action values are:

The exposure limit values are:

The exposure limit values take the effect of hearing protection into account. The exposure action values do not take into account the effect of any hearing protection.

Where the noise exposure exceeds an exposure action value or an exposure limit value the employer has responsibilities ranging from providing suitable personal hearing protectors to lowering noise levels by organisational and technical means through to the halting of the noisy operation until a quieter operation can be implemented.
